Mentre ad Espoo, la patria finlandese di Nokia, la gente cambia nome ai cartelli stradali – non sappiamo se ironicamente o come forma di protesta – arrivano i primi veri effetti dell’acquisizione della divisione prodotti e servizi da parte di Microsoft.
Tramite un comunicato agli sviluppatori, Nokia ha fatto sapere che il supporto alle piattaforme Symbian e Meego – o meglio quello degli sviluppatori – sta per finire. Nonostante la promessa di un supporto fino al 2016, il market verrà chiuso agli sviluppatori, dal 1 gennaio del 2014, che non potranno più inserire nuovi contenuti. Le applicazioni esistenti invece continueranno ad essere disponibili e i download remunerati. Certo è che questa mossa segna la fine delle due piattaforme che di fatto, dopo questa data, potranno continuare a vivere solo con il supporto della community. Di seguito il comunicato di Nokia:
“Dear Nokia Developer,
With the growing business opportunities available on the Asha and Windows Phone platforms, we have been reviewing our developer content programs to see how we can maximize our support to you, our developers. As a result of this review, we have decided to focus our support and investment in new content toward Asha and Windows Phone. Over the next few months we will be transitioning our active developer support away from Symbian and MeeGo.
If you have Symbian and MeeGo content in the Nokia Store, it will continue to be available for download to customers, and you will continue to receive download and revenue reports as well as payouts for downloaded content. However, starting January 1, 2014, you will no longer be able to publish any new content or update existing content for Symbian and MeeGo.
We are very excited about the opportunities available with Asha and Windows Phone, and hope that you will bring your talents to these platforms. We believe that these changes will help improve our ability to support you as you develop fantastic apps for your customers.”
Oltre a comunicare agli sviluppatori la decisione presa, vi è un chiaro invito a questi ultimi a concentrarsi sulle piattaforme Asha e Windows Phone, le uniche che continueranno a vivere sotto la guida di Microsoft. Quest’ultima ha già promesso che, oltre al pieno supporto, per i feature phone arriveranno nuovi contenuti e servizi speciali fin’ora in esclusiva per Windows Phone, come la suite Office, Xbox e SkyDrive.
